[Battery Manufacturing] This is a series introducing SAMSUNG SDI’s key battery manufacturing processes. It delivers the core roles and technical characteristics of each of the four processes—electrode, stacking, assembly, and formation—using infographic images. |
The batteries we use in electric vehicles, laptops, and smartphones are manufactured through multiple stages. The [Battery Manufacturing] series introduced this manufacturing process by dividing it into four main stages. Today, we bring all those steps together to provide an overview of the entire battery manufacturing process at a glance.
Based on prismatic batteries, manufacturing is carried out through the electrode – stacking – assembly processes.
The electrode process invovles manufacturing the anode and cathode, which are key components of a battery. In addition to the wet electrode process, SAMSUNG SDI has completeted construction of ‘DryEV Line,’ a pilot line for dry electrode process, and is now carrying out test production.
After the electrodes are produced, the stacking process layers the anode, cathode, and separator to form a stack. SAMSUNG SDI’s stacking method makes efficient use of a can’s internal space, thereby increasing energy density.
In the subsequent assembly process, stacks produced from the previous processes are enclosed in a hexahedral-shaped rigid can, finalizing both the external shape and internal structure of a battery.
Finally, the formation process imparts electrical properties to the cell, enabling the battery to fucntion. A final inspection is then carried out to ensure product quality.
