□ Expanding AI data centers drive demand for BBUs, broadening the scope of cylindrical battery applications □ SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical batteries fulfill critical BBU requirements: space efficiency, high power, and safety □ A tabless design enables fast charging and high power output, while integrated vents and CIDs ensure enhanced safety |
SAMSUNG SDI is expanding the application of its cylindrical batteries beyond traditional markets like power tools and home appliances into AI data centers. Because even a brief power outage in an AI data center results in massive losses, a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) serves as a vital infrastructure component for immediate emergency power. Capitalizing on this shift, SAMSUNG SDI is targeting the BBU market with its high performance, ultra-safe cylindrical batteries.
BBUs are installed in individual server racks within AI data centers, immediately supplying power to each server during an outage or severe power fluctuation. Alongside Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) systems, which are individually equipped in data centers to back up the overall facility, BBUs are essential to an AI data center’s stable operation. As a result, requirements for batteries used in BBUs are becoming strictly defined.
BBUs must use space efficiently because they are installed directly in individual server racks, and their batteries must deliver instantaneous high power. Furthermore, with many server racks crammed in an AI data center, safety becomes paramount.

SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical batteries incorporate all the features—space efficiency, high power, and safety—that a BBU must have. Cylindrical batteries can be effectively used even in limited server rack space because the form factor offers exceptionally high energy density and space efficiency.

SAMSUNG SDI adopts a tabless design that utilizes the electrode itself as a pathway for electrons. Shortening the electron flow path by tens of times enables ultra-high power, fast-charging, and heat reduction.
Furthermore, integrated vents quickly release internal gas during abnormal situations, while Current Interrupt Device (CID) blocks the current if internal pressure becomes unusually high, minimizing overcharging risks.
By balancing all properties of space efficiency, high power, and safety, SAMSUNG SDI’s versatile cylindrical battery will continue to focus on the AI data center market.
