SAMSUNG SDI meets all safety criteria in global fire safety test conducted by UL Solutions

Confirms effective prevention of heat propagation under thermal runaway conditions

Successful test results demonstrate SAMSUNG SDI’s differentiated safety technologies, underscoring its commitment to providing reliable solutions

SEOUL, Korea – July 14, 2026 – SAMSUNG SDI today announced that its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) batteries have passed the global fire safety test conducted by UL Solutions, a global safety science certifier, highlighting the company’s advanced fire safety technology.

UPS systems are critical infrastructure designed to ensure stable operation of AI data centers by instantly supplying emergency power in the event of unexpected outages or voltage instability.

SAMSUNG SDI’s UPS batteries successfully met all evaluation criteria of UL Solutions’ Indoor Large‑Scale Fire Test (LSFT), which assesses fire propagation risks under real‑world UPS operating conditions.

The Indoor LSFT examines whether a fire originating from a battery module within a UPS rack spread to adjacent racks or systems after the module is deliberately forced into thermal runaway.

During the test, the UPS battery module in which the fire was intentionally initiated was fully consumed, while no fire propagation occurred in surrounding racks. No gas release, explosion or rupture was observed, and all safety and performance criteria were met.

Notably, the fire self‑extinguished without activation of overhead sprinkler systems, further demonstrating the differentiated fire safety performance of SAMSUNG SDI’s technology.

UL Solutions introduced the Indoor LSFT earlier this year to assess explosion and thermal propagation risks in real‑world UPS fire scenarios. SAMSUNG SDI is the first company globally to officially meet the test’s requirements.

As major global tech companies and AI data center operators increasingly require verified fire safety performance as a prerequisite for selecting battery suppliers, SAMSUNG SDI expects this test result to further strengthen its differentiated safety competitiveness among global customers.

In this test, SAMSUNG SDI demonstrated its safety performance by applying proprietary thermal propagation prevention technology enabled by a uniquely engineered system structure. SAMSUNG SDI also used lithium manganese oxide (LMO) materials with high power output and stability, and applied its proprietary prismatic battery technologies, including aluminum casings designed to withstand heat and physical stress and gas‑release vents.
