The business delivered a significant improvement in earnings, driven by strong sales growth in energy storage systems (ESS) and battery backup units (BBUs) amid the expansion of the global AI data center market, as well as increased sales of cylindrical batteries for power tools and electric vehicles.
In the Electronic Materials Business, revenue increased 18.9% year-on-year to KRW 275.7 billion, while operating profit rose 18.3% to KRW 45.9 billion.
The business maintained solid performance amid favorable overall demand, supported by increased sales of semiconductor patterning materials and display film materials for foldable smartphones.
Business Highlights for Third Quarter 2026
During the third quarter, SAMSUNG SDI strengthened its leadership in the U.S. ESS market, ramped up its LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery business, and advanced next-generation technologies and new applications.
In the U.S. ESS business, SAMSUNG SDI strengthened its business foundation by enhancing its local production and supply network. Backed by growing ESS demand in the U.S., the company secured more than 60 GWh of orders this year alone.
The company also plans to use its Synergy Cells plant in Indiana as an ESS battery production hub to meet strong market demand, while securing production capacity through phased expansions to strengthen its local business foundation.
On the supply chain front, SAMSUNG SDI signed long-term supply agreements for LFP cathode materials with major Korean materials companies to meet U.S. demand for supply chains independent of China.
SAMSUNG SDI also ramped up its LFP battery business. This month, the company began mass production of high-capacity prismatic LFP cells at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in the U.S. In Europe, it secured an LFP battery project for electric vehicles while continuing to pursue additional orders.
SAMSUNG SDI is also expanding its product portfolio for AI data centers, recently unveiling cylindrical LFP cells for BBU applications. The company plans to grow its LFP business by diversifying its applications.
The company also accelerated the development of next-generation technologies and efforts to explore new markets to gain an early foothold in future growth areas. For all-solid-state batteries, SAMSUNG SDI shipped samples for humanoid robot applications while continuing customer evaluations and preparations for commercialization. In cylindrical batteries, the company secured new customers in the aerospace and humanoid sectors.
Business Outlook for the Fourth Quarter 2026
SAMSUNG SDI expects the ESS market to maintain its growth momentum in the fourth quarter. In the EV market, demand in Europe is expected to increase, while sluggish demand in the U.S. is likely to persist for the time being.
In the ESS battery business, the company plans to accelerate additional production line conversions for LFP batteries in the U.S. to respond proactively to market demand. It also aims to finalize within the year long-term supply agreements currently under discussion for utility-scale ESS and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications, establishing a stable foundation for growth.
The company also plans to actively participate in Korea’s third round of government-led bidding for ESS battery supplies to further strengthen its position in the domestic ESS market.
In the EV battery business, SAMSUNG SDI plans to proceed as scheduled with the establishment of mass-production lines and a supply chain at its production base in Hungary to meet customer demand for prismatic batteries. The company also plans to secure new orders based on a diversified product portfolio that includes high-nickel, LFP and mid-nickel batteries.
In the Small Battery Business, the company plans to expand its product lineup, including cylindrical LFP batteries, while increasing supply volumes to existing global cloud service provider (CSP) customers and actively securing new customers.
In the Electronic Materials Business, SAMSUNG SDI plans to expand sales with a focus on semiconductor patterning materials. For organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials, the company will focus on entering new platforms of major customers.
“We will continue to pursue mid- to long-term growth based on profitability,” said a SAMSUNG SDI official. “We expect to maintain profitability in the fourth quarter, supported by continued solid growth in the ESS and small battery businesses.”
