SAMSUNG SDI unveiled battery solutions for AI data centers at a conference held as part of DCWA 2026(Data Centre World Asia), a data center exhibition, in Singapore on September 29.
Under the theme “Battery Enables AI: Redefining Power for AI Data Centers,” Pro Jong-in Yoon, who took the stage as a presenter, introduced UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery technology for AI data centers and other solutions applicable across data center operations.
Batteries become critical infrastructure in the AI era
As AI use expands, data centers’ power demand is growing rapidly, putting the spotlight on batteries. Because power usage in AI data centers can fluctuate sharply within very short periods while servers are running, batteries are increasingly seen as essential to maintaining the reliability of power infrastructure, not merely as a power source.
The key attributes of UPS batteries for AI data centers are safety, durability, and intelligence.
First, on safety, fire standards for batteries are being tightened. Whereas safety assessments once focused on individual cells or units, large-scale fire tests that reflect actual installation environments are becoming increasingly important. SAMSUNG SDI’s UPS batteries demonstrated their safety by becoming the world’s first to meet all criteria in an indoor LSFT(Large Scale Fire Test) conducted by UL Solutions.

Durability also matters. UPS systems must supply power in emergencies, manage power quality, and even smooth out sudden AI load fluctuations, all while withstanding repeated charging and discharging. SAMSUNG SDI’s UPS batteries offer fast charging and long-life to handle volatile power demand and remain stable through shifts between charging and discharging.
Intelligence is another must-have. To manage power reliably, AI data centers increasingly placing importance on a technology that diagnoses and manages battery status in real-time. To meet this need, SAMSUNG SDI uses precise current sensing and automatic SOC(State of Charge) calibration to monitor the battery status accurately.
Battery solutions span the entire data center
The presentation walked through battery solutions used throughout the data center, from servers to power infrastructure, with each area using different solutions depending on its role.
In servers, the BBU(Battery Backup Unit) supplies immediate power in the event of an outage. UPS supports reliable operation in the power equipment zone, and ESS(Energy Storage System) improves operational efficiency by connecting to the grid and storing energy.
To address the full range of requirements, SAMSUNG SDI offers a broad battery portfolio including BBU, UPS, and ESS. In particular, the company unveiled an LFP(lithium iron phosphate)-based 21700 cylindrical battery for BBU at the exhibition.

By strengthening safety, durability, and intelligence in its batteries and leveraging its extensive product portfolio, SAMSUNG SDI will expand power infrastructure solutions optimized for AI data centers.
