□ Expansion of logistics, service robots and humanoids highlights the importance of battery as their power source □ SAMSUNG SDI responds to the future robot market with cylindrical and all-solid-state battery technologies |
As the growth of the robot market accelerates, the battery—the core component driving these machines—is becoming increasingly important.
Batteries play as a key role in dictating a robot’s performance, runtime, and overall scope of use. To allow robots to operate longer and perform more various work, battery technology tailored to specific operating environment and purposes is essential.
As robots evolve, battery performance matters more
As robot types and their applications broaden, the demands placed on batteries are evolving as well. Because logistics and service robots must perform repetitive tasks like transporting goods over long periods, extended operational life and stable output are crucial.
Physical AI platforms like humanoids require even higher level of battery performance. Because they must run real-time AI computations while executing human-like movements, they need to deliver instant bursts of high power while maintaining sufficient overall capacity.

Adding to this challenge, robots have limited interior footprints and complex structures, which restricts the space available for battery installation. This necessitates high energy density batteries that can store significant power even in tight spaces. Developing battery technology that maximizes space efficiency while delivering long runtime and high power output is considered a central objective.
SAMSUNG SDI’s battery technologies encompass entire robotics industry
Aligned with this market trend, SAMSUNG SDI is building its competitiveness in robotics around cylindrical and all-solid-state batteries.
Armed with high power output and a broad spec portfolio, SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical batteries serve as key products meeting market demand. The flexible form factor of cylindrical batteries allows them to adapt to robot platforms, making them highly versatile logistics and service roles.

Furthermore, SAMSUNG SDI is targeting the next-generation robot market by developing pouch-type batteries using SolidStack, its all-solid-state technology. SolidStack incorporates SAMSUNG SDI’s proprietary solid electrolytes and innovative anode-free design to boost energy density while enhancing safety.
SAMSUNG SDI first unveiled a sample pouch-type all-solid-state battery last March and is pushing forward with development, aiming for mass production in the second half of 2027.
