Amid the intensifying technology competition to lead the next-generation battery market, SAMSUNG SDI is moving to secure super gap technologies by accelerating its R&D through its global research network.
Centering on its domestic R&D center, SAMSUNG SDI’s global network includes overseas research centers located in key global hubs such as U.S., China, and Europe. This network is not just about securing overseas research outposts; it helps identify technology trends and enhance R&D capabilities by leveraging the specialized industries and academic environments of each region.

Technological exchanges led by overseas research centers: Technology forums held in Shanghai and Boston
SAMSUNG SDI’s overseas research centers actively interact with local industry, academic, and research communities, continuously gaining technological insights into next-generation batteries.
Last April, SDI R&D China, based in Shanghai, held a forum focusing on all-solid-state and sodium batteries. The forum served as a platform to share the latest research trends and industry developments with Chinese battery and materials experts.
Earlier in December of last year, SDI R&D America(SDIRA) in Boston also held a technology forum, which deepened global technological exchanges and cooperation networks.

Global industry-academic cooperation reaps result: Lithium-metal battery challenges resolved
The role of overseas research centers is not confined to technology exchanges. They are producing tangible outcomes in resolving battery technology challenges through joint research with local research institutions.
Last February, SAMSUNG SDI’s domestic R&D center and SDIRA cooperated with Columbia University to develop a new electrolyte formulation that simultaneously improves a lithium-metal battery’s lifespan and safety. The achievement was recognized for its technological excellence and published in Joule, a leading global journal in the energy field.
This approach shows how SAMSUNG SDI establishes a virtuous cycle by combining regional expertise and research environments to solve technical challenges that would be difficult to address alone, linking these to follow-up projects at its domestic R&D center.

Establishing a company-wide technology sharing system: Quarterly Insight Sharing Sessions
Employees in overseas research centers serve as a bridge between local technological environments and HQ strategies. Insights gained from on-the-ground research sites are promptly shared and verified to be reflected in global R&D strategies.
In addition, the company holds “Conference/Exhibition Insight Sharing Session” every quarter to share the latest trends and technology development directions, translating them into enhanced technological competitiveness.
