Battery performance and safety may seem to be determined by materials, but actually, component design and its structure play critical roles in ensuring high-power, energy density, and safety.

A prismatic battery consists of various parts, including current collection terminals, vents, and cap plates. SAMSUNG SDI optimized the component design and advanced the manufacturing process of PrismStack, its prismatic batteries, upgrading battery performance and safety.
By reducing the total number of internal parts, SAMSUNG SDI increased the PrismStack’s space efficiency and maximized energy density. Minimizing the volume occupied by structural components secures more space for active cathode and anode materials.
Reducing the component counts also helps control internal resistance; fewer connections naturally lead to lower resistance. SAMSUNG SDI has leveraged this to strengthen fast charging and high-power performance.
It further boosted this resistance reduction effect by renovating the component structure and manufacturing process itself. It adopted a “Direct-connect current collection structure,” where the terminals transmitting current to the outside are directly linked to the electrode tabs. Additionally, SAMSUNG SDI applied a new manufacturing process during component production to strengthen the bonding between parts and reduce internal resistance. This addition of component innovation has allowed the company to stably secure reliable high-power performance.
To ensure safety, the company continues to strengthen technological capabilities in terms of component. The PrismStack incorporates a vent into the cap plate at the top of the cell. This vent rapidly releases internal gases if they build up. SAMSUNG SDI’s specific design channels this energy in a single direction during release, which minimizes heat propagation to adjacent battery cells.
SAMSUNG SDI’s component expertise is epitomized by its “700Wh/L high-power prismatic battery,” a winner of the InterBattery Awards 2026. This battery enables an 800km range on a single charge while maintaining top-tier output and fast charging capabilities.
