As the global ESS market expands, technologies that enhance battery safety and its operational efficiency are gaining significant attention. The BMS(Battery Management System)* serves as a key system that comprehensively managing the battery’s state to ensure reliable ESS operation. * BMS is a system designed for the safe and efficient use of batteries, commonly found in devices such as ESS, electric vehicles, and power tools that utilize batteries.


In an SBB, a single system is operated where thousands of cells are incorporated in modules and racks. During operation, management at the individual cell, module, and rack levels is required to enhance the efficiency and safety of the entire SBB. The BMS monitors key data such as the voltage and temperature of cells and analyzes them to ensure the SBB is operated efficiently and safely.

Managing the performance variance among battery cells is notably important. As the condition and accumulated usage of each cell change over time, SoC(State of Charge) imbalances develop during charging and discharging, which can lead to the degradation of the entire system’s efficiency.

If certain cells within a system are used more than others, the heavily used cells will finish charging first, while the others remain partially charged. This ultimately decreases the total capacity of the battery with a single charge.

To solve this problem, BMS equalizes the capacity of every cell by adjusting the charging state based on the remaining capacity of individual cells, which is called Cell Balancing.
