[SDI Today] Low-Temperature Regeneration Dehumidification Cuts Power Consumption by 8%

SAMSUNG SDI has introduced a new dehumidification system in its domestic and overseas production sites, significantly reducing power consumption and achieving substantial cost savings as well as environmental benefits.


The ‘low-temperature regeneration dehumidifier,’ which has been gradually implemented since last year, is designed to lower the dehumidification temperature to 140°C to remove moisture from the air, unlike conventional dehumidifiers that use temperatures above 180°C.

By using a new dehumidifier coating agent, SAMSUNG SDI improved the rotor*, the component that consumes the most energy in the dehumidifier. As a result, the company succeeded in reducing overall power consumption in the production process by as much as 8% while maintaining dehumidification performance.

* Rotor: The core component of the dehumidifier that removes moisture from the air.


The low-temperature regeneration dehumidifier proved its effectiveness through a pilot test in 2023 and has been gradually introduced at SAMSUNG SDI’s domestic sites and overseas subsidiaries since last year. The implementation is scheduled to be fully completed by August this year.


The power consumption of dehumidifiers accounts for as much as 20% of the total power used at all sites, and the introduction of the low-temperature regeneration dehumidifier has significantly helped reduce this burden.


Dehumidifiers are essential in the battery manufacturing process, as electrode plate production and assembly must take place in dry rooms where the humidity is maintained at around 1% to minimize the impact of moisture.


To ensure strict humidity control, SAMSUNG SDI has installed over 300 sensors in its dry rooms to monitor humidity levels in real time and secure product quality.

SAMSUNG SDI became the first in the secondary battery industry to receive Carbon Trust’s “Carbon Footprint” certification and continues to advance its eco-friendly initiatives. The company plans to further pursue energy savings through ongoing improvements in high-efficiency equipment.
