SAMSUNG SDI Selected as Finalist for ‘The smarter E Award’

SAMSUNG SDI has been selected as the sole “Award Winner” among Korean battery companies at ‘The smarter E EUROPE 2025’, the largest energy exhibition in Europe. 


The company announced that its new high-power UPS product, U8A1 and its No TP technology won ‘The smarter E Award’. 


‘The smarter E Award’ is presented at ‘The smarter E Europe’ annually across five categories—Energy Storage, E-Mobility, Photovoltaics, Smart Energy, and Outstanding Projects—to recognize the most innovate technologies and products in each field.


In March, SAMSUNG SDI became the only Korean company to be listed as a finalist, and it has now secured the final award, 



U8A1: Delivering Ultra-High Output, High Energy Density, and Space Efficiency

UPS must instantly supply power during outages, making rapid and powerful discharge capabilities essential. Since AI data centers that handle massive volumes of data and have sudden and high power demands, system failures may occur if the discharge current* is insufficient. SAMSUNG SDI’s U8A1 delivers a rated output of 263kW per rack, enabling stable backup power for five minutes. It also boasts one of the industry’s highest discharge current performances. “The U8A1 sets a new standard in output and reliability as the lasts UPS battery product with the highest discharge current in the industry,” said Jae-kyung Kim, Head of AEB) Development Office at SAMSUNG SDI.

*Discharge current: A measure of the electric output from a battery. The higher the discharge current, the more powerful the instantaneous output.

In addition, the U8A1 achieves high energy density, significantly reducing the number of racks required. With an installation footprint approximately 33% smaller than the previous generation, it significantly enhances deployment efficiency in space-constrained data centers.

The U8A1 also excels in safety. It incorporates insulating sheets between battery cells to minimize heat transfer. Each module includes fire-extinguishing capsules that enable early suppression in case of temperature rise. Flam-retardant materials and metal components were also used in the module and frame design to maximize safety. 



No TP Technology for Preventing Thermal Propagation in High-Capacity Cells

No TP is a safety-focused design technology implemented from the earliest stages of battery product planning. It prevents thermal propagation between cells, modules, and packs by embedding insulation materials based on the estimated total heat output of each cell. 

This was made possible by SAMSUNG SDI’s proprietary thermal propagation simulation program, which optimizes cell capacity standards, module sizing, and pack top/bottom structure. It not only enhances safety but also extends the battery pack’s lifespan by supporting the optimal life cycle.
