[SDI Focus] ‘Cell-to-Pack (CtP)’ Technology Skips Modules For Packs

SAMSUNG SDI showcased its Cell-to-Pack (CtP) technology at the InterBattery 2025 held on March 5. Cell-to-Pack (CtP) technology integrates battery cells directly into the battery pack, eliminating intermediate modules to increase energy density and capacity by placing more cells within a limited area and extending driving range.

Traditionally, battery cells were grouped into modules, which were then assembled into a pack for installation in EVs. Compared to the conventional cell-module-pack structure, CtP eliminates modules, enabling battery cells to occupy the space previously taken up by modules. This results in greater energy efficiency for the same volume. Additionally, eliminating modules decreases the overall weight of the vehicle. 


CtP technology also offers advantages in manufacturing. The simplified structure reduces design time and minimizes manufacturing process steps compared to traditional methods.

However, CtP technology is highly complex. While the conventional cell-module-pack structure provides dual-later protection for battery cells, CtP relies on a single-layer pack structure, so it’s crucial to ensure absolute safety. 


This is where SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic battery design offers significant advantages. SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic batteries feature an aluminum can-type exterior, providing high durability and strong resistance to external impacts, ensuring safety even with CtP’s single-pack structure. 


Furthermore, SAMSUNG SDI has incorporated its No Thermal Propagation (No TP) technology into CtP to prevent thermal runaway and enhance the safety of the internal structure. On top of that, the company is also applying simulation technology to strengthen pack design and continues to develop solutions to improve impact resistance.


Since 2023, SAMSUNG SDI has been mass producing pack products with CtP for PHEVs. Moving forward, the company aims to enhance energy density and safety in CtP technology, contributing to extended EV driving range and improved driving efficiency through light weighting.
