[SDI Focus] Solution to Ensure the Safety of ESS: SBB (Samsung Battery Box)!

SAMSUNG SDI has won the CES Innovation Awards® at ‘CES 2025’, held in January in Las Vegas, USA. The SBB 1.5 is an ESS product that installs battery cells, modules*, and racks* in a 20-feet containerized solution. In addition to easy installation, the SBB 1.5 has improved safety and capacity compared to the previous SBB 1.0 product, increasing customer satisfaction. 

* Module and Rack : Batteries go into the ESS in the form of modules and racks for safe and effective management. Modules provide the frame that protects the cells and also contain control systems and protection circuits. Racks are responsible for checking the status of the cells, such as temperature and voltage, by assembling the module units together.

SAMSUNG SDI has developed battery technologies for ESS by expanding ESS* business since 2010, and thought about how to make it easier for customers to install and utilize ESS, which consists of a comprehensive system. As a result, In 2023, SAMSUNG SDI successfully developed the SBB.

SBB is a 20-feet containerized solution equipped with safe HVAC system including batteries. It can be used immediately after connecting to the power grid.

SBB 1.5 has improved capacity, safety, installation and maintenance compared to the previous SBB 1.0.

By optimizing internal space, SAMSUNG SDI has increased the energy density per container unit by approximately 37% compared to the previous SBB 1.0 product.


SAMSUNG SDI has also upgraded its technology for safety. The third generation of EDI* technology has further enhanced the safety of SBB. It prevents battery thermal diffusion by spraying fire extinguishing agents directly onto the modules.

SBB 1.5 is designed in two types. SBB requires opening and closing for operational maintenance, and it allows the users to choose between front and side opening options. This design enables efficient use of space for installation. For instance, placing four SBB 1.5 units with their backs and sides adjacent maximizes space efficiency, allowing more ESS units to be installed within the same area. 

Additionally, ESS 1.5 can connect up to seven units to a single Power Conversion System (PCS), enhancing convenience. Because ESS batteries output DC voltage, a PCS is required to convert it into AC for use in power grids. 


Through the development of ESS batteries, including SBB 1.5, SAMSUNG SDI aims to lead the growing ESS market.
