[SDI Focus] Cylindrical Batteries Evolve Into 46-phi batteries

Cylindrical batteries have been a part of lithium-ion battery’s history since its commercialization. Long favored by the market, cylindrical batteries, which have been evolved from 18650 and 21700* cells, are now transitioning to the 46-phi cylindrical battery.

* 18650/21700 : A battery with 18mm in diameter and 65mm in height/21mm in diameter and 70mm in height.

This is because the 18650 and 21700 batteries, initially used in power tools and micro-mobility devices, have found applications in electrical vehicles (EV), naturally leading to demands for improved performance in cylindrical batteries.


The advantages of cylindrical batteries are high productivity while achieving high power and capacity.

The high productivity of cylindrical batteries is largely attributable to the winding method. It is primarily used in the assembly process of cylindrical batteries, which involves inserting a separator between the anode and cathode and rolling them into a “jelly roll” shape. This method enhances production speed.


SAMSUNG SDI has accumulated its manufacturing technology over the years since it initiated manufacturing cylindrical batteries in the late 1990s, which has enabled the company to ensure stable production and cost competitiveness.

SAMSUNG SDI has developed a 46-phi cylindrical battery that is larger than its existing cylindrical batteries. By applying SAMSUNG SDI’s proprietary materials technology, it secured long life and safety. SAMSUNG SDI has completed the development of 46-pi cylindrical battery process technology based on its existing cylindrical battery manufacturing technology and is preparing for mass production.


SAMSUNG SDI plans to begin mass production of the 46-phi cylindrical battery for micro-mobility applications in early 2025. With the addition to its existing lineup of 18650 and 21700 cells, SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical battery portfolio will become even more robust.
