Thanks to its sturdy aluminum case, the prismatic cell is resistance to external impacts, minimizing the risk of electrolyte leakage or internal short circuits. Even if heat is generated due to an impact, the aluminum case prevents heat from spreading to other cells. The high thermal conductivity of the aluminum material also helps to dissipate heat more quickly.
SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic batteries also incorporate advanced safety technologies. One notable feature is the “vent,” which is designed to release gas when internal temperature and pressure rise due to external factors such as overcharging and overcurrent. In addition, a “fuse” is integrated to cut off the circuit when abnormalities are detected, mitigating potential risks from overcharging.

Another advantage of prismatic batteries is their superior performance. Their structure is conducive to high energy density, as their rectangular shape allows for more efficient use of space when arranging the cells. High energy density is particularly essential for achieving longer driving ranges in EVs. Furthermore, the stacking method, which piles the materials one by one, improves space utilization compared to the traditional winding method.
