[SDI Focus] 900Wh/L All Solid Battery Becomes Reality

2024.12.03

In March 2022, SAMSUNG SDI started its launch of Korea’s first all-solid-state battery (ASB) pilot line, a 6,500-square-meter ‘S-line’, at the SDI R&D Center located in Suwon. In 2023, SAMSUNG SDI supplied samples of ASB produced at the S-line to customers and aims to mass-produce them in 2027.

A battery is made up of four materials: cathode, anode, separator, and electrolyte. An all-solid-state battery replaces the liquid electrolytes the only one of the four materials that is liquid, with a solid one, making all the components of a battery solid.

The most significant features of all-solid-state batteries are stability and high energy density.

Lithium-ion batteries use liquid organic solvent as their electrolytes, so there is the potential for the battery to catch fire in the event of external impacts. However, when it comes to all-solid-state batteries, risks are very low because they use solid electrolytes.

Because solid electrolytes in all-solid-state batteries can replace the role of a separator, the energy density can be increased by removing the separator. Furthermore, SAMSUNG SDI’s ASB uses its proprietary solid electrolyte material and innovative anode-less technology to reduce the volume of the anode and increase the energy density by adding more cathodes.

SAMSUNG SDI’s All Solid Battery has the energy density of 900Wh/L*, which is 40 percent higher than prismatic batteries currently in mass production. If they are installed in the same vehicle, they can save more space and reduce weight.

* Wh/L: the energy density per unit volume, Wh(Watt-hour) refers to the amount of power expended for one hour of time.

SAMSUNG SDI is thoroughly preparing to achieve its goal of mass-producing all-solid-state batteries in 2027 with a differentiated competitive edge. All-solid-state batteries have been long referred to as a ‘dream battery’, and now SAMSUNG SDI is making that dream a reality.
