[SDI Focus] How Effective ESS EDI is?
2024.10.22
SAMSUNG SDI unveiled the SBB* 1.5 equipped with its differentiated technology, 'EDI (Enhanced Direct Injection)’, to ensure ESS safety at the ‘InterBattery Europe 2024’ exhibition in June. This is because as the ESS market is expanding, and interest in ESS safety is increasing.
* SBB : Samsung Battery Box (SBB) is a 20-feet containerized solution for ESS, equipped with batteries and BMS. It can go online once it is connected to the grid.
[ESS consists of battery cells and modules housed in the rack. It also consists of the system including BMS(Battery Management System), PCS(Power Conversion System) and EMS(Energy Management System)
In the case of SBB 1.5, these systems are organized into a single container, which is designed to allow modules to be installed directly inside the container without the rack.]
When battery cells in ESS catch fire, the cell heat radiates to adjacent cells. Therefore, effective prevention of thermal propagation is the most important. SAMSUNG SDI’s EDI technology is one of the key technologies to prevent thermal propagation in ESS.
In the event of a fire, the EDI technology quickly lowers the temperature of the affected cells, effectively preventing the spread of flames to adjacent cells. The fire extinguishing agents are sprayed through the pipes connected to the inside of the modules. The EDI technology lowers the overall temperature by accumulating fire extinguishing agents.
The EDI technology launched at the ‘InterBattery Europe 2024’ is SAMSUNG SDI’s third generation ESS safety technology. The first-generation, introduced in 2019, directly prevented thermal propagation by using fire extinguishing sheets, while the second-generation’s direct injection technology improved the system by using fire extinguishing agents. The third-generation of EDI has improved from direct injection onto the battery cell to injection onto the module. It uses the extinguishing agents more efficiently and is therefore more effective in preventing heat propagation than the second-generation technology.
[SAMSUNG SDI ESS safety technology continues to evolve.]
ESS products embedded with the EDI technology have been recognized for its safety by UL*, the global safety certification organization. SAMSUNG SDI met the the UL9540A test standards for the safe installation of ESS. UL9540A allows SAMSUNG SDI’s ESS product to be installed without the need for separate fire-fighting systems.
* UL(Underwriters Laboratories) is a certification organization for the development of safety standards, founded in 1893
